When to throw out gym chalk powders?

When to throw out gym chalk powders?

Honestly, deciding when to get rid of powders really depends on you and the condition that your mixes are currently in.

For the first two years that I was making videos, I probably only threw out one bin of powder. I waited so long because I was afraid to let go of anything since I had such a small ASMR budget at the time and only a very small collection of powders. But there was at least one mix that I added baking soda to that had to be tossed. It got way too hard and I just didn't like the texture at all. So, I decided not to waste anymore product fixing it and instead opted to throw it out.

Recycling your powders

By my third year, I was investing a lot more in ASMR and didn't feel the need to hold on to old powders the same way anymore. I'd have regular cleaning sessions to get rid of old mixes and I often rehomed them by selling them in gallon bags to other ASMRtists. I got rid of almost all of my OG powders this way. I also made a ton of reforms out of my old mass crush mixes and sold the reforms in my shop too. This helped me clear out a lot of my powders without having to watch them go to waste.

Where to dispose of your powders

Sometimes there are powders that you just can't help but waste. You might not have the space anymore and there's nobody available to take them. Or they've gotten old and the texture or smell is not the same so you just don't enjoy playing in them anymore and you can't give them away or sell them. Or sometimes, they go bad from moisture exposure and get moldy or smell like they're about to. I mean, you really can't use those anymore, so there's no option but to toss them.

Only you can decide when is the right time and you have to trust your gut. I know that I do a lot of recycling and rehoming of my powders, so I don't feel bad when they get tossed. And I don't think anyone should make others feel guilty about their decision to get rid of old powders. Especially when you've found ways to dispose of them responsibly.

1. Construction waste dumping. As far as disposing of your powders, you can usually do a quick Google search to see where drywall or concrete dumping is allowed and dispose of them there. Most cities have a place where you can dispose of and recycle construction waste.

2. Fertilizers / Composting. If it's only a very small amount you're getting rid of, you can also consider using the powder as a natural fertilizer or adding it to your compost. In small amounts of course. Since many ASMR accounts can use 5-50 lbs of chalk per month, this may not work as a solution in those cases.

3. Regular Recycling / Trash. It's recommended that you dump your bulk powders in a recycling or waste management facility with the ability to dispose of construction waste, but if that option isn't available, you can toss away small amounts in your regular trash or recycling bins. Just make sure the container is tightly sealed to prevent dust exposure for any workers who might have to handle your items. Always pack your trash in a way that prevents exposure... especially when it comes to powders which can be harmful if inhaled. Nobody should have to be exposed to unknown dust and debris at work.
